Spam Karma

In an ongoing effort to thwart the rising influx of comment spam, I have installed Spam Karma. Hopefully this plugin makes my need to moderate less. The built-in comment spam tools in WordPress are lacking. I had to basically delete it myself. But this Spam Karma looks to be more promising.

I’ll let you know.

Getting on my OWN nerves

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while… Believe it or not I haven’t been at my computer much over the weekend (although my wife may argue that point). I’ve had some pain in my wrist and hand. Of course my first thought was carpal tunnel (spelling?). Since I’m on the computer at least 8 hours most days and ergonomics is a foreign word to me, this was a logical conclusion.

So I went to the doctor today to have things checked out. As it turns out, I don’t have carpal tunnel (again, spelling?). What my problem is, is I am getting on my “own” nerves. Basically there is a nerve running from my elbow to my pinky and I lean on it most of the day thanks to arm rests on my chair. Apparently this is aggravating the nerve and it is beginning to fight back.

So my prescription is to take some pain pills (ie Aleve) and get rid of my arm rests. Done and Done. Hopefully this does the trick. One of the alternatives is to have surgery and move the nerve that I am pinching. That doesn’t sound fun at all.

So now I sit at an armless chair, which feels weird. There’s nothing to lean on and my arms just dangle here. But I suppose I’ll get used to it. Anyway, I will attempt to post a little more now, or I will at least think about it. That’s all I can promise. :)

Commenting disabled…

… on posts older than 30 days. This is in a small effort to thwart the recent influx of comment spam I’ve been recieving. You haven’t seen much of it, because it gets captured by WordPress and held for moderation, but I would rather not have to moderate these large numbers of comments.

So a solution that I found over at Ensight is to basically turn off comments for posts older than a certain period of time. This generally works because most comment spam is on older posts, or ones that have been around a while and are worked into Google’s search results.

So we’ll see what happens.

WordPress Hosting

I’m thinking about doing some WordPress hosting. I haven’t discussed this with my partners yet, but I think it would be a good way to get our name (SliverNet) out there and some traffic flowing through our server. I’ve done a little bit of looking and it looks like the way to do it is charge little and rely on lots of customers. I’m not sure how this will work, but I think it’s worth looking into. If we offered some sort of cheap Blog Hosting, do you think people would buy it? I think they just might.

Just an idea.

RSS is now Burned

My RSS feed is now being massaged through FeedBurner. For those of you who already subscribe (if there is anyone) nothing will change for you, but any newcomer will be getting my FeedBurner RSS. What does this mean? Well basically with FeedBurner I can keep track of who views my feed, plus they have a cool way of integrating links from my newly activated ClipBlog from Bloglines. So we’ll see if this thing works out. The only drawback that I see so far is that my RSS goes through a third party now, but I’m not sure that it matters much.

What’s your blog worth?

Taking blogging for money one step further, Jeremy Wright over at Ensight.org has been offered a nice sum of money for his blog. Ensight receives thousands of visits a month (I’m sure it is even tens of thousands of visits), so obviously this make it very attractive to those companies looking to capitalize on traffic.

Jeremy has written some terrific articles and I’m sure if he goes through with the sale, he can make another blog just as successful. Hopefully he leaves a forwarding address

I wish him luck.

p.s. If you are interested in making a bid on Ensight.org, just visit the site and I’m sure you can contact Jeremy from there.

WordPress Skinned

Well as you can tell, I did a little skinning work yesterday. I just did something quick, I don’t think I’m going to stick with it. I, more or less, just wanted to get something put up other than the default template that WordPress came with. I’m still trying to figure out what I am going to do for a template. I may just try out some ideas here to see what I like. So look for the template to change often for now.

Made the Switch

Well, I’ve made the switch, at least temporarily. I still haven’t created a new look for this site yet, but I wanted to start using it for posting so I didn’t have to double post. My MovableType site is still accessible, but it is now located at http://mt.arandomact.com. So if, for whatever reason, I feel like going back, I can.

Anyway.. help me out and give me suggestions on a color scheme. But for now I’m going to get back to work that actually pays me money. ;)
