Free Anarchy

Anarchy Online is free of charge for a year. I’ve never tried out any of these MMORPG’s (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games — for those of you who didn’t know) mainly because I don’t want to pay a monthly charge for them. Well now I have the chance to see what all the excitement is about and it won’t cost me a dime. You don’t get any of the expansion packs, but what do you expect for FREE.

Now we’ll see if I can rustle up any FREE time to actually sit down and play the game.

I’m Subversed!

So last night I got Subversion running on my machine here at home.

What is Subversion? You may ask.

Well it is the successor to CVS which, to the lay-men(spelling??) out there, is used for “Version Control”. Basically the deal is, as some of you know, I design websites on the side (shameless plug– visit SliverNet for all of your web hosting and design needs). But I’m not the lone designer, so in an effort to keep track of all of the pages that we are working with, I started thinking about version control software.

Well it just so happens that our “guru” at my real job was looking into alternates to CVS and had decided on Subversion, so I thought I would take a look at it.

Setup was extremely easy, first I installed the latest Apache 2 webserver so I could access this repository from anywhere. Then I installed Subversion, which then configured Apache for me. Pretty simple so far. I also installed TortoiseSVN which is the Win32 GUI (yes, I am on a Windows machine).

Next came the more complex stuff, which turned out not to be very complex at all because… I read the documentation. (Shhh, don’t tell anyone, but reading the documentation helps.) And BAM.. I’m Subversed!

Yeah, I know, how big of a geek am I to get excited about getting version control setup. Oh well, just be thankful you don’t have to live with me like my wife and kids do. Anyway, enough for now.

I’ve been Hacked!

It all began on Tuesday, November 16th. I noticed my computer was acting a little strange, mainly in terms of being slow. I didn’t think anything of it at the time. Computers, some days, are just slower than others (I know this isn’t necessarily true, but the illusion is real).

Then Wednesday evening, I was surfin around and my machine was simply crawling a long with a noticeable limp. I got frustrated and shut it down.

Thursday morning, I started it back up and was presented with a Virus warning from my AVG program. “Crap!” (We’ll keep it PG for those kids out there)

So, when I logged in, I scanned my machine, which took about 40 minutes because of my 120GB hard drive. At the end it said it had found 1 virus and “healed” it. Well that must have simply ticked off something because my machine became even more unresponsive so I rebooted again.

This time when my machine came up, AVG warned me of another virus, this one called “Backdoor.Hacdef.c” or better known as “Hacker Defender”. Yes, I had a virus on my machine defending other viruses/spyware/adware from my attempted attacks on them.

So after a bit of searching on the web, on my wife’s computer since mine wasn’t doing so well, I came across my Holy Grail, step-by-step instructions on removing this wicked, little demon.

Well, after a couple hours of killing processes, deleting registry entries, and clearing out files, I can finally claim victory over this Defender of Hackers. The only question that remains, is where did this dang thing come from? Oh well, I’m not going to waste more time trying to figure that out. I’m just going to go back to enjoying the normal speed of my machine.

Peace out.

Konfabulator!

Started playing with Konfabulator this morning. Looks like an interesting little program. I’m not really sure how to describe it other than a collection of “things” that sit on your desktop for you to use. Pretty vague, huh? The best I can offer is a link for you to check it out yourself.

GRRR… Dell

I’ve been patiently waiting all day for my new hard drive carrier assemblies to arrive for our new Dell server. Finally, I called Dell and asked where they were and they cheerfully tell me that they will be here on Monday.

GRRRRR…

“I payed for Overnight delivery,” I tell the guy. He proceeds to tell me that they put me down for 2 day. Needless to say I’m not very happy. But I complained enough to get my $16 bucks back.

GRRRRR…
