Movies based on Video Games: Good or Bad?

I just got done reading an article about how Peter Jackson has just been hired to produce the movie Halo which is based on Microsoft’s extremely popular game of the same name. In that same article I found out that another movie, Doom, is being released later this year. That got us thinking here in the office. Has there ever been a Movie based on a Video game that was GOOD? What are your thoughts on this? Below, I’ve compiled a list of movies based on games, let me know if I’m missing any. I’m struggling to find any that were great to watch.

  1. Well, I liked the Tomb Raider movies–but it was a chick kicking butt! I also have never seen or played the game, though, so I have nothing to compare it to.

  2. My vote: all pretty much stinky bad except Tomb Raider (I). That get’s just a “bad” rating…Angelina’s, um, assets, bump up the rating.

  3. I actually liked Resident Evil, but then I’m a sucker for zombie movies. Tomb Raider was ok, fun movie. Everything else on that list sucks.

  4. I love zombie movies so the Resident Evil movies are up there for me. Wing Commander would have been alright if not for Freddie Prince Jr. He makes me want to smash stuff. I have high hopes for Doom but the rest are not worth my time. Accept for the Tomb Raider movies but only because of Angelina’s, I’ll say it if Pat won’t, boobs and other visually pleasing body parts.

  5. Can’t say I’ve ever watched half of the movies on the list, mainly because of the reputation of movies based on games. But maybe I should see RE based on m’s and YamFu’s recommendations.

  7. I think Doom looks promising! As far as the other movies on the list go… who cares if they are stupid, they’re cool because stuff gets blown up and Angelina jumps up and down! Plot is for chicks and non-fiery movies.
