It all began on Tuesday, November 16th. I noticed my computer was acting a little strange, mainly in terms of being slow. I didn’t think anything of it at the time. Computers, some days, are just slower than others (I know this isn’t necessarily true, but the illusion is real).
Then Wednesday evening, I was surfin around and my machine was simply crawling a long with a noticeable limp. I got frustrated and shut it down.
Thursday morning, I started it back up and was presented with a Virus warning from my AVG program. “Crap!” (We’ll keep it PG for those kids out there)
So, when I logged in, I scanned my machine, which took about 40 minutes because of my 120GB hard drive. At the end it said it had found 1 virus and “healed” it. Well that must have simply ticked off something because my machine became even more unresponsive so I rebooted again.
This time when my machine came up, AVG warned me of another virus, this one called “Backdoor.Hacdef.c” or better known as “Hacker Defender”. Yes, I had a virus on my machine defending other viruses/spyware/adware from my attempted attacks on them.
So after a bit of searching on the web, on my wife’s computer since mine wasn’t doing so well, I came across my Holy Grail, step-by-step instructions on removing this wicked, little demon.
Well, after a couple hours of killing processes, deleting registry entries, and clearing out files, I can finally claim victory over this Defender of Hackers. The only question that remains, is where did this dang thing come from? Oh well, I’m not going to waste more time trying to figure that out. I’m just going to go back to enjoying the normal speed of my machine.
Peace out.

That is pretty wild, because this week I also discovered my machine had a virus. It wasn’t a very aggressive one, but it replaced or damaged RUNDLL32. As a result, my machine was getting weird…windows explorer wouldn’t open right, it wouldn’t shut down properly, control panel icons were failing to work.
I tried AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy, installing a software firewall, Windows updates, nothing worked. I finally d/l Norton Antivirus this week, and it spotted the problem: Trojan.startPage.
I have the exact same disbelief…how did I get it? I don’t use IE, I don’t open attachments, I’m behind a hardware firewall, I patch regularly. Guess I should stop downloading porn dialers or something.
Yeah, we know about your “addiction”. The first step towards recovery is admitting it. Good Job!
