To Host or Not To Host…

… that is the question.

My Dad, Brothers, Friend and I are thinking about starting a Web Hosting company (well, more than thinking, researching really) and I have a lot of questions that need answered.

– First off, is it a good idea.
– Second, can we make money.
– Third, how do you do it.

I think we have the first two pretty much covered. Web Hosting can be a lucrative business, especially when packaged along with website design and consulting. But there is a bit of a learning curve that needs to be traversed in order to get up to speed. One of our major goals would be to provide reliable, friendly customer service. But to do this, we all need to know what the heck is going on.

There are many established web hosting companies around and we are going to have to set ourselves apart. I think we can do this with reliability and quality customer service. The biggest complaint I’ve seen about web hosting companies revolves around these two subjects.

The plan is to start out small. Rent one dedicated server and start advertising. The goal would be to, eventually, buy the servers and run them directly from our location. But in the interest of smaller up-front costs…. this will come later.

Anyway, if anybody out there has any advice on starting a business such as this, or any small business for that matter, drop me a note. I’m interested in hearing everyone’s opinions. Also, if anyone is looking for someone to host their next site, (shameless plug) look me up. Hopefully we will be up and running sometime in Early 2004.

Hmmm…. gotta come up with a company name…….

It’s Snowing

This is probably nothing big deal to most out there, but when it snows in Salem, Oregon… it is news-worthy. I work up this morning to about 6 inches of the white stuff on the ground. At first, when I looked out my back window, I thought maybe I had left the light on, but on second glance, I figured out that there was a heck of a lot of snow out there. Needless to say I am pretty excited. I still had to go to work though because I have responsibilities to take care of, but that was part of the excitement because I got to drive my new 4WD for the first time in something that was 4-wheel-worthy. I must say it handled quite well; I passed many struggling 2WD vehicles. Anyway…. Just thought I would share my excitement with all of you….. now, back to our regularly scheduled programming……

Where’s the Beef?

As I am sure most of you have already heard on the news, Mad Cow was discovered in the US yesterday. Right now everyone is in a frenzy to figure out if it has been distributed and made it onto store shelves yet. I’m not sure if I should be nervous about this and stay away from beef for a little bit, or just go on consuming my McDonald’s or Burger King. But then, do those two use real beef? and if so, is it really that fresh?

What about you, my loyal readers, are you going to just say no to beef for now or are you not concerned at all? Comment back, let me know. It might help me make my decision.

A Little Re-Organization

I’m moving a few things around today to hopefully make the flow work a little better. Please feel free to let me know if anything looks like crap or if you want me to move something back. All CONSTRUCTIVE comments will be considered. Of course, this isn’t a democracy though so if I don’t like what you have to say….. too bad.

Some points of interest:
1. Got rid of RandomAds
2. Now showing the most recent comments
3. Moved all archives to the left side
4. Removed RandomJoke

The Good, The Bad, and Mine

Andrew over at AndrewBlog has come up with what he thinks makes a good blog. A Set of Guidelines to help struggling bloggers navigate the vast blogosphere.

AndrewBlog: Making a Good Blog for Dummies

It’s a good read and it definitely got me thinking about my blog and how I present it. I’ve been so concerned with adding feature after feature that I think I may have slacked on content. This may also be due to the fact that I’m not exactly a “creative” writer. However, I know I can do better than what I have. So thanks to Andrew, I’m going to try to do a better job delivering some content to my meager number of readers (I think I may be up to 5 ΒΌ). So if I start sucking really bad then it is his fault.

Just kiddin…….

Valid XHTML

Well, I know Jill is going to care a lot about this but, my site now is Valid XHTML and I have the button to prove it. Where’s the button you may ask…. Well it is on the right side of the site under “Other Stuff”. Any questions let me know.
